Users that can run proxy servers.
  Oct 2005
As you know there was yet another de-peering between networks that has caused SETI to be off the air for many users. It sure looks like Cogent don't have too many friends! Anyhow I'm pretty certain it will happen again however they fix it up this time around.

Its with that in mind that I have a scheme. I have tried it today and it seems to work. I spent a couple of hours setting up squid on one of my Linux boxes. I only have a domestic ISP connection which is capped so I have to be careful here. But anyway I decided that I could offer a few folk a proxy using squid to get over their problems. I saw many had searched for proxies and whilst they found them there was a little success in getting them to work. I guess they are quickly taken over by  purveyors of less than decent material and getting clogged.

I set mine up to only accept known to me IP addresses. So I asked for those in trouble to come forward and give me their IPs and I configured squid to accept them and then for it to work as a normal proxy. I have to say taking my own traffic off my LAN onto the Internet and then back in to my proxy to have it sent out again to UCB causes some timing issue but it does hold up.

I know there will be issues over dynamic addresses etc but its a workaround for now. I got thinking about this. This is the third de-peer since May 05 and its only October 05. We also had routing table faults a few months ago which kept users off line for days and weeks.

So, I thought, why can't those that can run proxies get into a buddy scheme with other - say 10 - users and swap IPs so that if they are hit with problems they can use their buddies proxy. Only for Seti I might add as browsing etc would be a real problem and an abuse I think. Such a scheme would need to be well spread geographically to work well but I think there are enough to do that.

If anyone is interested then please put a comment in the thread you saw this page in and perhaps we can get a scheme going where hundreds or even thousands have a backup scheme. It may only be someone taking on 1 or 2 small users but it could be more of course. Every little helps I guess!

Thanks folks!

Ian
